Nathan Crick, associate professor of Communication at Louisiana State University, will speak at this year’s GVSU School of Communications James W. Carey Memorial Lecture. He will be discussing “The Birth of the Spectacle: Persuasion, Power, and Production in Early Greek Tragedy.”

Crick explores the complex intersections between art, science, rhetoric, and democracy, focusing on the theory and practices of the Greek Sophists and the American Pragmatists. He is the author of “Rhetorical Public Speaking” (Allyn & Bacon, 2010) and “Democracy & Rhetoric: John Dewey on the Arts of Becoming (University of South Carolina Press, 2010).

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, October, 17 2012 at 6:30 pm in Lake Huron Hall 132. Professor Crick will also answer questions following the lecture.

“Rhetoric is an act of creation deployed to reveal better versions of ourselves in the midst of uncertainty, crisis, and possibility, ” Crick said.

The James W. Carey Memorial Lecture is sponsored by the Communication Studies Major Program, the School of Communications, and the Institute of General Semantics. The annual lecture is named for the late communications scholar James W. Carey, who was involved in the founding of the GVSU School of Communications.
