Journalism professor to speak on The Global Public Sphere

Journalism professor Vandana Pednekar-Magal will host “The Global Public Sphere,” through the Center For Inquiry (CFI). The event will discuss how emerging new communication technologies have transformed the media landscape.

The current state of media globalization is marked by something new. We are witnessing the end of the ‘mass audience’ and ‘mass media’ and have moved to a segmented audience that is also the creator of content on ‘interactive networks’ of converged media. Media are at once private and public; local and global. The structure, content and use of global media defy the given parameters.

The CFI fosters a secular society “based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values.”

Dr. Pednekar-Magal’s research includes journalism, global communication, communication policy and societal issues in the media. She has recently published an anthology, has produced a documentary and has had research published in scholarly journals. She was a feature writer and a reporter for several years, and also did freelance writing.

The event will take place Wednesday, November 14 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the Women’s City Club. Meetings are open to the public. General admission is $6.00, and the event is free for Friends of the Center. After the meeting, attendees are invited to Vitale’s Restaurant to socialize.
