Olivia Mashak, a 2015 Advertising and Public Relations graduate, has recently accepted a post grad internship with Rape Crisis Cape Town. Mashak is taking the skills she gained from Grand Valley courses, PRSSA, GrandPR, and the internships she has had and heading to South Africa. Mashak is very excited to put her skills to work in an organization where she can make a difference.
“I’m stoked to take the knowledge I gained during my time at GVSU and be a part of an organization that helps others,¨ said Mashak. ¨I always knew I wanted to use my education and skill set to do something that mattered. Working for a nonprofit like Rape Crisis is the perfect way for me to do that.”
Rape Crisis Cape Town is a nonprofit organization that supports survivors of sexual assault, offers counseling, assists survivors through the legal process, and educates communities of sexual assault and the myths that surround it. All of their services are free of charge.
“Rape culture is real,¨ said Mashak. ¨There are a lot of myths and misinformation surrounding violence against women, especially sexual assault. I am proud to be part of an organization that is working to put an end to this problem that affects one in five women.”
According to the Rape Crisis Cape Town website, the organization’s mission is “to promote an end to violence against women, specifically rape, and to assist women to achieve their right to live free from violence by reducing the trauma experience by rape survivors, encouraging reporting of rape incidents and facilitating the active engagement of communities in challenging high rape rates and flaws in the criminal justice system.”
